Sanjay Kurade - From Bicycle to Cockpit: A Journey of Quiet Determination

The Bombay Flying Club Aviation College of Mumbai

In the crowded lanes of an ordinary Indian neighbourhood, where the rhythm of life is measured by the daily grind of labour and the modest hopes of working-class families, a young man began a journey that would carry him from the seat of a simple bicycle to the cockpit of an aircraft. His story is not one of privilege or early advantage. It is the story of a boy from a regular, hardworking family the son of a labourer who had never driven even a two-wheeler in his life. Yet today he sits in the pilot’s seat, guided by discipline, opportunity, and an unshakable will to rise.

Those opening forty-five minutes in the air remain etched in memory with extraordinary clarity. Every view through the windshield the sprawling city below, the shifting patterns of cloud and light, the sudden sense of height and freedom felt unforgettable. The ground that had always confined him fell away. The bicycle that had once been his farthest means of travel now seemed part of a distant past. In that short span of time, the young man who had known only the streets of his neighbourhood experienced the quiet miracle of flight. Each glance outward became a permanent image: the horizon stretching endlessly, the aircraft responding to his hands, the realisation that the sky itself had become reachable.

The contrast between his origins and this new reality could not have been sharper. Raised in a household of limited means, he had grown up without the ordinary markers of mobility that many take for granted. A two-wheeler had never been part of his life; the bicycle had been enough. Yet the path from that bicycle to the cockpit of a Cessna was neither sudden nor accidental. It was built through rigorous preparation, competitive examinations, and the rare recognition of merit by national institutions.

Early in his journey he faced the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s Private Pilot Licence examinations. From across India, only forty students were selected. To stand among that small group was already a significant achievement. It marked him as someone whose dedication and aptitude had been tested against a wide field and found worthy. That selection opened the formal door to structured pilot training and set the foundation for everything that followed.

Today the next chapter is already underway. Specialised training aimed at airline employment is in progress. The single-engine foundations laid in the Cessna 152 and 172R are being built upon with more advanced instruction, operational knowledge, and the professional disciplines required of commercial aviation.

The goal is clear: to move from the training aircraft of a flying club into the structured world of airline operations.

What makes this narrative compelling is not only the sequence of achievements but the quiet distance travelled. A boy who had never driven a scooter now commands an aircraft. A student from a labourer’s household has been counted among the top few in national examinations and scholarship selections. The first forty-five minutes in the air those unforgettable views of earth and sky have become the opening scene of a longer flight that continues.

This is a story of transformation grounded in reality rather than romance. It speaks of the power of focused effort, of institutions that still recognise merit, and of the possibility that exists when opportunity meets determination. From the bicycle of a modest neighbourhood to the cockpit of a training aircraft in Mumbai, and onward toward the airlines, the path has been earned step by step. The sky that once seemed impossibly distant is now the place where he works, learns, and prepares for the responsibilities that lie ahead.

The A320 Cockpit Experience ✈️

There is something truly fascinating about sitting in the cockpit of an Airbus A320. Every switch, instrument, display, and control represents precision, discipline, and the incredible science of flight.

Being in the cockpit is more than just an experience it is a feeling of responsibility, focus, and connection with aviation. Every time I step into an A320 cockpit, the experience feels special and unforgettable.
